As part of Connecting for Health it is planned that some parts of your record on our computer will be uploaded to the NHS Care Records Service computer.  This has caused some debate in the media.  It is planned that the following items will be uploaded at some time in the future:

  • Drug allergies

  • Medication

  • Major diagnoses and operations - these will be on our computer as Priority 1

Opting out of Summary Care Records

in a letter dated 15th March 2007, Professor Martin Marshall and Dr Gillian Braunold writing from the Department of Health made the following statement regarding the electronic Summary Care Records which will be introduced in some Early Adopter sites this spring.

Some people have expressed concerns about the security of the Summary Care Record and the confidentiality of patient clinical information. The security arrangements are robust and are at the leading edge of national and international standards. Only staff with an NHS Smart Card can access the record, and then only for people to whom they are delivering care – people with whom they have a Legitimate Relationship.

Despite this, there will be people who wish to limit their participation in the Summary Care Record. They can:

1. Choose to have a Summary Care Record but not agree to others having access to it. They can change their mind at any time and access can be enabled. This facility is managed through the flag on the Patient Demographic Service which can be set to either “consent to share” or “dissent to share”.

2. Choose not to have a Summary Care Record at all. For the few who wish this after having the implications explained, there will be a new flag within the GP software. Before this is present, practices should record the person’s wish using the Read Code 93C3 (Refused consent for upload to national shared electronic record)

The practice has in place a mechanism whereby patients who are adamant they do not want to participate in the national care record can make their wish clear.  We have adopted the request form below.  We would also invite patients to read the patient leaflet below
