Asthma monitoring:
The needs of people with asthma change with time and we ask that our patients who continue to need treatment for their asthma attend an annual review. If you do not want to attend please let us know as this will save us from having to repeatedly write to you.
At the annual review we will ask about your symptoms and smoking,
measure your peak flow rate and work with you to optimise the management
of your asthma.
We have two practice nurses who have been specially trained to treat
asthma and all the clinicians in the practice work to the
2008 British
Thoracic Society guidelines.
We particularly want to see you if you are diagnosed as having asthma
and:
- it is disturbing your sleep
- causing you to miss school or work
- you have regular symptoms
We are particularly keen to stop those of you who smoke from smoking
- see smoke-stop.
Immunisation against flu
It is no longer felt appropriate to immunise all asthmatics against influenza. The chief medical officer has suggested we immunise asthmatics who require continuous or repeated use of inhaled or systemic steroids or with previous exacerbations requiring hospital admission.
Please check out Asthma UK website, it contains much useful information

The Asthma Control and Expectations survey found:
- More than 50% of the 1000 patients who participated in the study
believed that having asthma imposed restrictions on how they lead
their lives
- More than two-thirds (69%) were resigned to the fact that they
cannot do certain things because of their asthma, such as playing
sport
- 32% avoided physical activity as they thought it would worsen
their condition
- Only 37% contacted their doctor if they thought their asthma was
getting worse.
- Only 7% took the time to attend an asthma clinic appointment
