Practice Nurses
Our practice nurses provide a wide range of services in the medical
centre and by using their skills we hope to reduce the waiting time to
see a doctor.
We would like the following new problems assessed by one of our
nurses rather than a doctor:
- Urine infection (cystitis) in adult women
- Vaginal discharge
Increasingly they are developing qualifications in the management of
complex medical conditions and, for these conditions, are taking over
much of the ongoing care from doctors. These include;
- Monitoring and management of patients with diabetes, asthma and
hypertension
- Family planning and contraception
- Child and travel immunisation
- Treatment of leg ulcers
- Monitoring of hormone replacement therapy
Our district nurses deliver nursing care to patients in their
homes. They work closely with the doctors and practice nurses to ensure
continuity of care for patients and provide a close liaison with the
Home Help services, Social Services care managers and hospitals.
Patients eligible for a visit from the District Nurse must meet the
following criteria:
- Have a specific nursing need and are:
- Unable to travel to the surgery/hospital due to serious illness
or disability.
- Is housebound unable to leave their home environment. (A patient
is not housebound if they are able to leave their home with minimal
assistance).
- Is recovering from surgical intervention and is unable to travel
- needs palliative and or/terminal nursing care.
Messages for district nurses can be left by phoning 752442
Technicians
The centre is fortunate in having technicians who, by taking blood,
performing ECGs, lung function tests etc., give the fully qualified
nurses time to carry out more complex duties.
